So why is the MSM having such a hard time?
There are probably many reasons, not least of which, competition from non traditional sources of news available on the internet. However, I believe one big reason is the Canadian MSM has allowed itself to become propagandists for Conservative parties in Canada. That is a recipe for business failure.
Election, after election have indicated that Conservatives are a minority in this country. They are out-numbered by 2-to-1. So, catering to the minority it going to turn off the majority, which is going to lead to lower revenues and profits.
I am a case in point. I am political animal. I follow politics very closely and I used to watch many of the political news shows, like Power and Politics, quite often. Not any more. I have not watched any of those shows in a long while because they have just become a Conservative echo chamber. Even when they have a non-Conservative on the show it is usually a "Liberal" who has been out of politics for sometime and for whom the Liberal Party has moved on from. As well, I will no longer pay for my news. I do not watch TV news (although I did watch it for about 6 weeks when this pandemic really got started), I do not pay for any newspapers and I will not buy an on-line subscription either.
I am not alone.
By turning their backs on around 70% of their potential audience they essentially set themselves up to fail. Why are they doing this? Well, it is not a secret that much of the Canadian MSM are owned by ideologues who want to use their companies to push the conservative agenda in a quixotic attempt to convert Canada to a conservative country. So it is a race. What will happen first? Canadians will become more conservative or the MSM will essentially fail completely and become totally irrelevant. I would not take any bets on the MSM winning that race.
The funny thing is if a media company were to come along and actually just report the news without the propaganda it would probably make a killing. No spin, no sensationalism, no click bait. Just good old fashioned news that deals with the facts of the story and allows the consumer of it make their own conclusions. I would consume the news from such a company.
No industry can turn its back on 70% of its potential customers and expect to succeed. But that is exactly what the Canadians MSM has done. The outcome of the continued diminishing of the traditional MSM is inevitable unless they change that.

I get more info from everyday tweeps and bloggers than the useless MSM. That goes for the U.S. too. Dangerous malpractice in their relentless coverage of Hillary's emails, Hillary's charity, Hillary's speaking fees and nothing about Trump's endless malfeasance. Why am I having deja vu all over again?
The fact that Canada's press couldn't be arsed to cover an assassination attempt on the PM because they were too busy having a circlejerk about another manufactured scandal is Mayberry banana-republic behavior. If some lunatic radicalized by online conspiracy theory networks plowed his pickup truck full of guns into the White House or 10 Downing Street, you'd never hear the end of it for days. I suspect a big part of it has to do with the fact that he was not a halal sausage maker, and that the media has a general and very personal disfavor of this PM, to the point where they honestly don't care that there are people trying to kill him. Wouldn't want to interrupt the broadcast with something that might turn the voting public sympathetic to him when they're going full-steam ahead trying to tear him down.
The other part of it is their own culpability in that particular matter. He went to place him under "citizen's arrest" (or worse) for supposed criminality in the SNC scenario, a narrative that the MSM themselves pushed for months and are doing yet again. That right there is a failure of accountability that renders their big-name "journalists" no better than Alex Jones or Matt Drudge. At best they're ignorant dinosaurs on their way to extinction. At worst, despite circling the drain, they've become an active security threat.
Jackie, I agree with you on the MSM have been taking the attempted assassination of the PM much too lightly and if they had any kind a investigative journalism capacity left the link between the radical right and the Conservative Party of Canada would be a very good story to follow.
As how the Rideau Hall security detail handled the would be assassin, I am not prepared to cast aspersions on them just yet. Protecting the PM and the GG are the choice gigs in the RCMP. To get on that detail you must have a spotless record and psych profile. Of all of the members of the Mounties, the ones who are charged with protecting the PM and GG are the least likely to allow any personal feelings to interfere with their professional conduct. So the reason why the guy is still alive might have less to do with his skin colour and more to do with the fact that the PM, GG and their families were not on the grounds. They contained the guy, which allowed security to evacuate the staffs of all of the buildings and they had the luxury of time in talking him down. If either the PM or the GG or any of their families would have been there the outcome might not have been so nice for the would be assassin.
